Happy Birthday Amy!

Amy Meyer turned 33 this month, and she knows how to broker a party. Groovin to the menthol-cool stylings of a three-piece jazz band she hired off a porch in Mt. Pleasant, sixty of Amy's old and new friends celebrated our favorite globe trotter with gallons of sangria, cake, and dual "3" pinatas.

A Lot Like a Good Romantic Comedy

A Lot Like Love is a really bad movie. This is indisputable. Cliches abound. Silly dialogue jumps up at every turn. It's way too long.

But Amanda Peet is adorable and very funny. Ashton Kutcher is a good actor. He's a guy's guy, not the Hugh Grant ass clown type that makes men run from romantic comedies.

Together, they could have been today's Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan if only they had been given a good script.

A real shame. Let's hope that they get another chance.

Great soundtrack though, with "Brighter than Sunshine" by Aqualung, and "Breathe" with Anna Nalick.

Not ready for his closeup

I just don't get why people like Al Gore. And that bewilders me. I can usually understand the appeal of popular people even when I am not myself a fan. I don't like Bill Clinton, Britney Spears, or Bill O'Reilly, but I "get" why other people do.

He reminds me of the sinister Ellsworth Toohey in Ayn Rand's The Foundtainhead.

Can someone explain it to me? Can someone who loves Al help me out here?

The big Apple in the Big Apple

Not that anyone needs a reason to go to NYC, but I'm definately planning a road trip to see Apple's new flagship store at the southeast corner of Central Park across from the Plaza. It's a beaut. 1600 sq. ft. of our favorite Apple toys, with a giant glass cube entrance leading down clear stairs to the cavernous store below.

Anyone wanna come with me?

"The Office" Public Service Announcements

Have you seen the fake public service announcements on NBC made by the cast of "The Office"? They are hilarious. My favoritest are "Short", "Smell You Later", and "Relationships".

Janey's Married!

Janey Jordan is now Janey Smith! The wedding was last night in Austin, and despite a brief torrential downpour, it was a great time.

Bruce and Janey now begin months of fun ... first a honeymoon on St. Barth's, then off to a family trip to Italy and France.

Way to go Janey!

A drunk Kennedy? Go figure.

Oh for Pete's sake.

It appears that another Kennedy had a car crash surrounded by mystery or malfeasance. Rep. Patrick Kennedy crashed his Mustang into a concrete barrier last night on Capitol Hill. Officers say he appeared intoxicated, but Pat says he had taken a prescription for his tummy and an Ambien ... no alcohol. On the Congressman's good word, he was driven home without arrest or without a sobriety test. How convenient.

Pat was coked up on meds and bourbon and we all know it. Who takes an Ambien and then goes for a drive at 3 am? Addicts, that's who.

When are people going to wise up and stop putting Kennedys in office? People, if you encounter a Kennedy in the wild, the proper response is to put a buffer zone of safety around the Kennedy and yourself at once. You do not go on a date with it. You do not give it money to invest on your behalf. You do not ski near it. You do not let it babysit your child. You do not crawl into a car or plane with it. And for the love of Jimminy Cricket, you do not elect it into office.

I ain't talkin' politics here. I'm just talkin' common sense.

Sheesh.

Small Town

For all the complaining that I do about Lockhart and growing up in a place that has two Dairy Queens but no Starbucks, I'm really glad to be home. I drove around today with my dad, and I was actually a little sad to see that the rural farming town I remember is slowly slipping away. Trailers and abandoned cars are popping up like weeks along the highway from Lockhart out to the family place in Maxwell, and everything seems smaller.

But it's still the country, and although I'm not ready to move back, it's nice to visit. Click here for a few photos from today.
